Choking

Choking is when something gets
lodged in the throat, blocking off oxygen to the brain. Because of the lack of
oxygen going to the brain, if you see a victim choking, you need to perform
first aid immediately. The red cross recommends the 5 by 5 method;
1) perform 5 back blows between the shoulder
blades using the heel of your hand.
2) perform 5 abdominal
thrusts (aka the heimlich maneuver)
3) alternate between the 5
blows and the 5 thrusts until the thing lodged in the victim's throat is
out
What are abdominal
thrusts?
1) Put a fist above your navel
2) grasp
your fist
3) shove your fist upward and inward (like
CPR)
