Stages of Cold Related Illnesses by Callaway
Frostbite-
frostbite is the freezing of the skin and/or body parts. It is very dangerous,
and should be considered a threat no matter how large the area affected is.
Stages
of frostbite
Frostnip
(first degree frostbite)- coldness irritates the skin resulting in a superficial
burning feel. This stage is not much of a threat, although it does cause pain
and extreme rewarms of affected area.
Second
degree frostbite- Although blistering may occur, second degree frostbite has no
majorly damaging effects. Pain and occasional swelling
occur.
Third
degree frostbite – The skin is very damaged through all three layers. The frozen
skin will blacken and die. Seek medical help fast if this burn is encountered.
Forth
degree frost bite- Both the bond and tendons have frozen. Go to the hospital or
call 911 ASAP.
General
Symptoms: Numbness, less blood flow than usual, and “tingling or stinging” or
the affected area. Severe frostbite may include white/grey/pale skin.
Treatment:
Go to a warmer location, don’t walk on feet if they are affected, put under warm
(not hot) water, wrap in a sterile gauze and keep dry. If you do not feel the
area after 30 minutes go to a doctor as quickly as
possible.

Stages
of hypothermia
Hypothermia-
when the body gets extremely cold (about 95 degrees) many systems begin to shut
down as the body goes into “survival mode”. This is known as
Hypothermia.
Symptoms
of hypothermia include- nausea and increased hunger if the core of your body’s
temp. begins to drop. After you experience these two symptoms you are not far
from confusion, slurred speech, loosing consciousness, being tired, and
eventually a coma. If any of these symptoms occur, call 911! If help does not
arrive fast enough you will eventually die from the
cold.
Treatment-
Seek a warm location fast! You don’t have long if these symptoms have already
developed. Try taking a warm shower and getting under a blanket (to heat the
body up). Make sure to drink water and eat food.
