Severe Bleeding by Anna
- Call 911!
- If at all possible, disinfect hands before touching the
wound area. Put clean gloves on. If gloves are not
available, use a sterile plastic bag.
- If organs have been moved out of place, don’t try to push
them back into place.
- Cover the wound with a dressing, if the above
circumstance is true.
- Have the victim lie down.
- Elevate victim’s head above heart and elevate the site of
bleeding.
- If wearing gloves, remove any visible debris from the
wound.
- Using a sterile bandage or cloth material, apply continuous
pressure to the wound until bleeding stops. Do not check
the wound until about 20 minutes have passed.
- Bind the wound with medical tape and a clean cloth or
bandage.
- Never remove the cloth/bandage! Instead, add more
material to the wound if blood seeps through.
- If needed, apply pressure to the artery that is supplying
the blood. Keep applying pressure to the wound. Main
arteries are located behind the knee, just above the crook
of the elbow, in the groin, and below the armpit.
- Immobilize the wounded body part.
